We are looking forward to watching your adventure as you embark on your learning journey as junior children. We hope that you will have lots of fun as well as making the best possible progress.
Our PE days will be on Thursdays and Fridays so please wear your PE kits to school on these days.
Please encourage your child/children with their home reading and talk with them about the stories they are reading and the characters that they may come across.
Keep a look out for photos of our learning and fun on our class page and social media.
🔦 Year 3 Explore the Science of Shadows! 🌞
Our curious Year 3 scientists have been busy investigating shadows as part of their light topic in science.
The children began by asking an exciting question: “Are shadows always the same size?”
To find out, they carried out a series of fun experiments, testing how shadows change when an object moves closer to or further from the light source. They used torches, different materials, and careful measurements to record their observations — just like real scientists!
Geography fun in Year 3!
We have been exploring the different mountain ranges in the world in Year 3! We had to locate and name different mountains and then create our own posters based on a mountain of our choice.
Themed Week - Year Three Travelled Back To The 1990's!
Year 3 took a step back in time as part of our 1990s-themed week. The week was filled with engaging, cross-curricular activities designed to immerse students in the culture, music, fashion, and daily life of the decade.
As part of their learning, pupils explored popular music from the 1990s. They learned the choreography to ‘Stop’ by the Spice Girls and gave a performance of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis. They also created colourful, lyric-inspired guitars and designed their own bucket hats!
DT Fun - Making our own cushions!
This half term in Design and Technology, we’ve been developing our sewing skills through a hands-on textiles project. Pupils planned, designed, stitched, stuffed, and decorated their very own cushions from start to finish. Along the way, they learned how to use both cross stitch and running stitch with care and precision. The final results were fantastic — a wonderful showcase of creativity, perseverance, and growing technical skill!
Year Three reflects on Remembrance Day
Year 3 have been learning about Remembrance Day by exploring the themes of memory, gratitude, and peace through artwork and poetry. Pupils created thoughtful poppy-inspired art and wrote reflective poems to honour those who have served. Their creative work shows a growing understanding of the importance of remembrance and provides a meaningful way to pay their respects.
Children In Need 2025!
To support Children in Need, Year 3 challenged themselves to complete 25 good deeds throughout the day. They read stories to Class R, helped empty bins, and supported different members of staff around the school. Each time they carried out an act of kindness, they proudly ticked it off their good-deeds list. The children showed wonderful teamwork, responsibility, and generosity, and we are delighted with the positive impact they made.
Year Three went on a Christmas trip To the farm!
Year 3 had a wonderful day visiting Smithills! The children loved seeing lots of different animals and enjoyed feeding the donkeys, sheep, and horses. They had great fun on a tractor ride, watched the cows being milked, and finished the day with a very special visit to meet Father Christmas.
A fantastic day full of learning, excitement, and festive fun! ⭐
💃🕺 Year 3 Dance Festival Fun! 🎶
Year 3 enjoyed an exciting dance festival session. The children worked together to learn and create their own dance to the song “One More Time” and finished by confidently performing their routines to each other. It was wonderful to see their creativity, teamwork, and confidence shine!
Themed Week - Around The World - Exploring Asia
Year 3 enjoyed exploring our “Around the World” theme with a focus on Asia. Through geography, art and cultural activities, we learned about a range of Asian countries, landscapes and traditions.
The children investigated famous landmarks, compared climates and environments, and located countries on maps. We had a great week!
Science Investigation Time! 🥼🔭
Year 3 have been getting their hands dirty in the name of science! 👐🌿
In our latest investigation, we explored the drainage rates of peaty and sandy soils. After making predictions, we tested each soil type and observed how quickly water passed through.
The children found that sandy soil drained quickly, while peaty soil retained more water — fantastic observations and teamwork all round! ⭐🔎
Exploring just like Shackleton 🧭❄️🥾
Using compasses, we have been learning how to navigate using north, south, east and west before planning their own expedition around the school playground. Working in teams, they plotted routes, followed directions and completed challenges along the way — just like real polar explorers! 🌍✨
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes 📚
This term in English, we are reading an exciting new book called The Iron Man by Ted Hughes!
Before we began reading, we looked at the title and made some predictions about what the Iron Man might look like.
We thought he might be:
Very tall – maybe as tall as a building!
Made completely out of shiny metal
Grey or silver in colour
With big, glowing eyes
With huge hands and feet made of iron
Strong enough to lift cars or even trucks!
Some of us thought he might look a little bit scary at first. Others thought he might look friendly, even though he is made of metal.
Year 3 Explore Right Angles with Their Own Monsters!
This week, Year 3 began an exciting new maths unit on shape! To make learning about right angles fun, the children designed and created their very own Right Angle Monsters. Using their monsters’ “right angle arms,” the class explored the classroom to see if corners were right angles. They tested everything from books and tables to doors, discovering how right angles appear all around us. It was a creative and hands-on way to bring maths to life, and the children had lots of fun testing their monsters in action!
Exploring Forces in Science!
Year 3 carried out two exciting experiments to explore forces. First, they blew over the tops of their hands to see how air can create a push. Next, they tried to move a ball floating in a cup of water—without touching it—using only air to make it move!
We also used playdough to explore different types of forces. They practised twisting, bending, stretching, and pulling, discovering how each force can change the shape of the dough.
