Right to Withdraw a Child from Religious Education
Religious Education (RE) is a statutory subject for all pupils in school, and at Farington we follow the Kapow Primary R & W scheme, which is designed to support children in developing knowledge, understanding and respect for different religions and worldviews.
However, parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE lessons. This right applies to every maintained school, academy and free school in England.
What this means
- You may request that your child be withdrawn from the whole of RE, or from specific parts of it.
- The school must supervise pupils who are withdrawn, but is not required to provide alternative teaching or resources during this time.
- If you wish, you may make arrangements for your child to receive RE elsewhere (off site), provided this does not interfere with attendance at school and has been agreed with the local authority.
How to request a withdrawal
If you wish to withdraw your child from RE, please:
- Contact the Headteacher to arrange a discussion about your request.
- Specify whether you wish your child to be withdrawn from all RE lessons or just certain aspects.
- Submit your request in writing so that we can record and confirm the arrangements.
You do not have to give a reason for your request, but discussing any concerns may help us explain what is taught through the Kapow scheme.
What happens if your child is withdrawn
- We will provide appropriate supervision during the period of withdrawal.
- We will review the arrangements with you annually (or sooner if requested).
- Your decision remains in place until you inform the school in writing that you wish it to change.
If you would like further information about the Kapow RE curriculum, the topics covered in lessons, or would like to see sample materials, please contact the school office or alternatively our R & W subject leader, Mrs Roberts or the Headteacher, Mr Williams.
